This project was a struggle from the start. I have never been good at drawing or painting people, and when we were assigned this project I was really upset. I first did a layer of acrylic, to help make the oils look more rich, and then I started to lay down the oils. I was really happy with how the hair was turning out, but had no idea where to start with the face. Mrs. Rossi told me to turn my painting upside-down, and block off a majority of the picture, so I could only see one part of the picture. This worked for a little bit, but I started to get frustrated again and messed up. This project was ultimately a fail for me, but I'm hope the next portrait is a lot better.
For this project I wanted to do something different. My reference picture was of some cereal boxes in my pantry, not a challenging composition, but I wanted to challenge myself with the medium, I decided to use water colors, since I rarely work with this medium. While doing this project I used both water color paints and watercolor pencils, the pencils are more detailed and controlled, while the paints are more unpredictable, but both were necessary in achieving my final project. I found that with watercolors it is best to work in layers, and to ALWAYS start light. While I did enjoy watercolors, I'm going to stick with using oils.
